Foreign Language Publications Corner
Kodaira Central Library has a Foreign Language Publications Corner beside the 1st floor reception desk. Please take advantage of it.
There are magazines and newspapers as well as children's picture books in English.
Using the Library for the First Time
Anyone can read books and make a photocopy of the library materials.
To borrow materials such as books,magazines, CDs and cassette tapes, one must register for a library card (It is free of charge).
Those who live, work or study in Kodaira city and those who live in Higashi-Murayama, Kiyose, Higashi-Kurume, Nishi-Tokyo and Kokubunji can register.
However, those who have entered Japan on a tourist visa, even if they temporarily live or work in Kodaira city, are not eligible to register.
You may register at any library in the city.
Please fill out an application form and take it to the reception desk.
Personal identification (such as an alien registration card, a driver's license, health insurance card, student ID card, etc.) that verifies your name and address is required at the time of application.
A library card will be issued about 10 minutes after registration.
The library card is valid at any library and branch in Kodaira City.
Please be careful not to lose your card.
Your card will be valid for 5 years after the date of issuance.
When your card expires, please come to the reception desk and register again to get a new library card.
Please fill out an application form and take it to the desk with your old card. A new card will be issued.
If there is no change in your name, address, etc., you will not be required to present your personal identification.
What if I forget my card?
Please fill out a lending form and take it to the circulation desk along with books you want to check out
What if I lose my card?
Please fill out a report of the loss of your library card and take it to the circulation desk. You will be provided with a copy of the report.
Please keep this copy because it will be needed at the time of reissuing.
You may come to the reception desk with it to pick up your new library card a week later.
It may be used as a replacement card until your library card is reissued.
If you report that your library card is lost, we will "stop" it to prevent others from using it.
If you find your lost card before a new card is reissued, please give the copy of the report to the reception desk, so that we can cancel the "stop".
If you discover your lost card after a new card is reissued, please destroy the old card
What if I change my name, address or telephone number?
Please fill out a report of the change of user's registration and take it to the reception desk together with your personal identification (such as an alien registration card, a driver's license, health insurance card, student ID card, etc.), which verifies your new name and address.
Checking out Library Materials
After selecting your materials, please take them to the circulation desk along with your library card.
At all libraries in Kodaira City, you can check out at one time a maximum of 10 books and 3 CDs or cassette tapes.
However, those who live in Kokubunji can check out at one time just a maximum of 5 books and 2 CDs or cassette tapes.
If you are over 60 years old or have a disability, you can check out another 5 cassette tapes.
DVDs, videotapes and laser discs may not be checked out.
All library materials may be loaned for up to 2 weeks.
Subleasing the library materials, which may cause the delay of returning and loss, is strictly prohibited.
Beyond the Loan Period
If you wish to keep the same items beyond the loan period, you are asked to renew them at any library in the city.
You may also renew by telephone; in that case, you must give your name and 10 or 6-digit library card number.
You can keep the library materials for an additional 2 weeks after the renewal, unless others have reserved them.
Renewal is not permitted if you have already renewed the materials once or have returned them late.
Returning Library Materials
All the materials may be returned to the box on the return desk at any library in Kodaira City.
You need not show your library card.
Do not return them directly to the bookshelves; otherwise, they will not be recorded as returned.
When the library is closed, you can return the books in the book drop, located near the front entrance.
CDs and cassette tapes as well as books borrowed from other libraries should not be returned to the book drop. You should return them directly to the library staff.
Please return the library materials within the loan period.
Reserving Library Materials
If the materials you are looking for are on loan, or if they are available at some other library or branch in Kodaira city, you can reserve them at the reception desk or by telephone.
However, those who live in Kokubunji cannot reserve them.
When the reserved material becomes available, we shall notify you either by telephone or e-mail.
Please come to pick it up materials within 1 week; otherwise, your reservation will be cancelled.
If the materials you requested are not available at any Kodaira library, they may be purchased or borrowed from other libraries.
Please fill out a request form and take it to the reception desk.
It is possible that the books you requested will not be available.
Books from the National Diet Library are only available for reading in the library and can neither be photocopied nor checked out.
On our website, OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog) and the reception desk, you can reserve books.
In order to reserve books through website and OPAC, you need to register a password at the reception desk.
Your circulation records are deleted once you return library materials you have borrowed.
We do not disclose your personal information such as name, address and which books you are borrowing to anyone, except when the law provides.
Inter-library Loan Service
Those who live in Kodaira City can use libraries in Higashi-Murayama, Kiyose, Higashi-Kurume, Nishi-Tokyo and Kokubunji.
You should register for a library card in each city.
If you have 10-digit number's library card of Kodaira, Higashi-Murayama, Kiyose, Higashi-Kurume or Nishi-Tokyo, it is "Tama-Rokuto (North Tama 6 cities) common library card." You can register for each of those cities' libraries when you take the card to them.
Regulations are different from one library to another, so you are strongly advised to make sure of the details before you visit those libraries.
You should return the materials directly to the library from which you borrowed them, not to Kodaira City Library.

Photocopying services are available, restricted to books from the collection of Kodaira City libraries within the limit of Japanese copyright laws.
You may not photocopy more than a half of any one publication.
The same applies to the newspaper of the day and the current issue of a magazine as well as your own materials and materials you have brought in from other libraries.
A self-service copy machine is available (black-and-white only).
Please fill out an application form before you make photocopies.
The fee is \10 per copy for all paper sizes.
Our Homepage & Obtaining Your Password
On our website ( http://library.kodaira.ed.jp/ ), you can search our catalog, reserve books, check which materials you have borrowed and reserved, register your e-mail address, change your password and beyond the lone period.
In order to use these services you need to register a password at the reception desk (you do not need to register a password to search the catalog).
Once you have a password, you can access the above services not only on our website but also through a mobile phone, a smartphone and OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog) at the library terminals.
When you register a password, please fill out a form to change your registration and take it to the reception desk. It will be issued in about 5 minutes.
A password consists of a 4-digit number at the time of registration, but later it can be changed to at most a 10-digit number through the library website and OPAC.
If you forget your password, you should register again.
A forgotten password cannot be given either by telephone or at the desk.
Searching for and Reserving Library Materials
Though OPAC is available only in Japanese, anyone can use it to search for library materials.
If you input necessary information by keyboard or by touching the display (you can search materials by title, author, publisher, or date of publication), you will discover on which bookshelf they exist in which library and whether or not they are checked out.
You can also place a hold on materials through OPAC. A password is needed for this service.
Using the Audio Visual Materials
Audio Visual materials consist of CDs, cassette tapes, LDs, LP records, videotapes and DVDs, whose display cases are shelved in the AV corner.
CDs (available only in the central library) and cassette tapes may be checked out, but the rest of the materials should be used in the AV booths, which are located in the central library only.
To borrow or to use AV materials, one must register for a library card.
To borrow AV materials, please choose the AV materials you would like to use and take them to the AV desk.
If all the AV booths are occupied, please wait until they become free.
What if I forget my password?
We cannot tell you a forgotten password.
You must register a new password. Please fill out a report of the change of user's registration and take it to the reception desk.
What if I lose or damage a book?
You will be requested to replace it. First, please fill out a report of replacement at the desk.
As a general rule, please purchase an exact replacement book and bring it to the library.
If it is not available due to it being out of print and other reasons, you will be asked to purchase another replacement book that is specified by library staff.
What if I lose my personal belongings?
Please come to the reception desk on the first floor which keeps everything lost and found in the library.
